Prevas entrusted to construct

furnace regulation system for Outokumpu Stainless

Prevas has received an order from Outokumpu Stainless AB in Degerfors. Prevas' specialist expertise in furnace regulation and energy control for the steel industry is vital to this project.  Through precise regulation of the temperature of materials in customer furnaces, Prevas is able to improve quality and efficiency in both manufacturing and energy usage.

A review of the control systems is being made in conjunction with upgrades and new investments in furnaces at Outokumpu Stainless in Degerfors. Prevas has received an order to replace the control system for step-hardening furnaces with FOCS-RF, a product developed in-house, which is a market-leading system for optimizing all aspects of heating slabs for rolling.

Heating steel materials is a process that consumes a great deal of energy. In order to effectively regulate furnaces, it is necessary to optimize productivity, quality and energy consumption. In cooperation with the trade associations, Jernkontoret (the Swedish Steel Producers' Association) and MEFOS (Metallurgical Research Institute AB), Prevas has developed FOCS-RF, a software used for this type of optimization. It is possible to achieve energy savings of 5 - 10 percent while monitoring the rate of production and quality in order to obtain the best results.

"We are very happy to have received this order. Once again, it is confirmation that our specialist expertise in furnace regulation and the product that we have developed are in demand.   Investments like this are quite relevant to customers that manufacture advanced steel products and are affected by rising energy costs and increased global competition," says Christer Ramebäck, Business Unit Manager at Prevas AB.

"Prevas' product has already shown that it can bring about significant advantages in terms of energy consumption and productivity at facilities. Better quality control and access to support are also important factors for us," says Magnus Fröberg, Project Manager at Outokumpu Stainless AB in Degerfors.

Having a long-term, structured work methodology with continuous improvements in both productivity and quality is a must. That requires innovation in the form of new technical solutions. With its industry knowledge, Prevas has helped reduce costs, improve quality and help customers strengthen brand name in more than 1,000 industry projects.
